Introduction

Love them or hate them, Wells Fargo is doing what they can lately to stand out for the better and push the credit card industry forward. From the Bilt Mastercard, to the recent Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card, and now The Wells Fargo Attune World Elite Mastercard (the Attune Card), Wells Fargo’s recent launches all follow a similar theme: launch cards that don’t have any clear competitors, and that really do have a unique value proposition.

Their latest card, the Attune Card, is no different, and positions itself as the “everything else” card you never knew you wanted. Let’s dive into it and you’ll see what I mean.

Welcome Offer

While the Attune Card’s welcome offer of $100 after spending $500 or more in purchases on the card in the first 3 months is nothing to get too excited about, there’s another side to it that starts to show you why they call it the Attune card: they also donate $50 to Capital Link, a nonprofit organization.

Attune, Oxford defines as “making receptive or aware,” and the Attune Card is meant to make you more receptive to yourself and the world around you. This $50 donation is the first part of that.

Careful observers would note, though, that they could have just offered $150 as a welcome offer, and let you decide if you wanted to donate the $50 and where to donate it to, which is how every other credit card welcome offer works. So while I encourage giving a large portion of your income to charity, I wouldn’t be so quick to label this a feature, and I’m tempted to call it a bug.

Multipliers

With the welcome offer aside, here’s where the Attune Card really does live up to its name. It offers 4% back on Self-care, select sports, recreation and entertainment, and impactful purchases. At face value, that may not seem like much, until you realize what they include as part of each of those categories. I’ll list them all out here, but be aware that this is a long list, and I think that’s the point of the card. They want it to offer 4% back on almost everything that other cards don’t offer anything special back for:

And you earn 1% back on everything else.

Benefits

Given the laundry list of 4% back categories all for no annual fee, it makes sense that the Attune Card doesn’t offer any other noteworthy benefits.

Issuer Rules

Wells Fargo does have language on the page advertising the Attune Card that “You may not qualify for an additional Wells Fargo-branded credit card if you have opened a Wells Fargo-branded credit card in the last 6 months,” so if you jumped on the Autograph Journey card when that launched a few months ago, perhaps it’s best to wait a few months before applying for the Attune Card, or risk have a hard inquiry on your credit report that you didn’t even get a new card from.

In Conclusion

The Wells Fargo Attune Card is clearly unique, but I would argue it’s a good card for more people than just the crowd that likes the Attune branding of self-care and helping the planet. For people who already have cards that offer elevated multipliers for their more common spending categories, given the sheer amount of 4% back categories, I’d venture to say this might even be a more valuable ‘everything else’ card than a standard 2% back on everything card.

The difficult part is knowing if that’s the case for you without having to memorize all of the different 4% back categories, which is why we built Pointwise, an app that looks at your spending and preferences and compares it to the benefits of almost every card that’s out there, so you can know which credit card is actually best for you.
